Heavy Equipment Operation Training

Program Overview

The First Step Heavy Equipment Training (FSHET) program provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable, industry-based training in heavy equipment operation. This training includes both classroom instruction and hands-on experience using CAT simulators. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in construction, mining, and other industries requiring skilled operators.

Course Duration

  • 5-week course: Focuses on basic skills and equipment operation.
  • 10-week course: More in-depth coverage, including hands-on field experiences.

Course Structure

  • In-class instruction: Covering industry safety standards, equipment operation, and job readiness.
  • CAT Simulator Training: Hands-on experience with realistic equipment simulators.
  • Field Experience: Practice operating equipment in real-world conditions (for 10-week course).

Key Skills & Certifications

Students who complete this program will gain:

  • OSHA-10 Certification: Essential for working on construction sites.
  • CPR/First-Aid Certification: Standard life-saving skills for all employees in the field.
  • Flagger Certification: Safety training for controlling traffic on work sites.
  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Practical experience with simulators and real equipment.
  • Workplace Readiness Skills: Résumé writing, interview preparation, problem-solving, and workplace conduct.

Eligibility & Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • A drug screening is required to participate.

Financial Aid & Support

  • Program is free for participants.
  • Hourly financial stipends available during the program.

Learning Center and Workforce Program Partners

These workforce training programs are supported by various grants and partners who provide funding and resources:

  • ARC Inspire: This program is 80% funded through the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).  The total funding from ARC is $446,980.  20%/$111,803 is funded by other non-federal organizations.
  • HRSA Rural Health Grant: 100% funded by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy. The total federal funding for this program is $1,544,883
  • DOL-ETA Workforce Opportunity for Rural Communities (WORC 4):  This program is 100% funded with federal money.  The total federal funding amount is $1,440,438.
